How do mechanical forces influence battery performance and safety?

The 15th International Symposium on Fire Safety Science took place from June 7 – 12, 2026, in La Rochelle, France. As part of the BATMAX project, researchers from RISE investigated how mild electrical abuse combined with mechanical pressure affects pouch-type lithium-ion (NMC) cells.

The study found that moderate external pressure significantly reduced internal resistance, while slight overcharge and over-discharge had only a limited impact under the tested conditions. The cells also tolerated these combined stresses without immediate safety concerns.

Presented by Tian Li at IAFSS 2026, the research highlights the importance of considering mechanical conditions alongside electrical factors when developing safer battery systems and multi-domain digital twins.

Dissemination of the BATMAX project was achieved through a journal paper manuscript based on the work of Safety limit investigation and Cell safety testing results by Lei Jiang (RISE)
