Further enhancement of the foxBMS project by making the BMS an IoT native device and by that providing even more battery data to battery modelling frameworks and so support the develop the next generation battery management strategies.

Additionally, the support for novel sensors is added the foxBMS project, so that even deeper insights into the battery behavior can be analyzedand also contribute to better operating strategies in battery systems. One important here is that the battery models are available to battery system developers. The foxBMS will create a framework that allows to include battery models into the BMS in an IP secure way.

In the field of data analytics, research is conducted to develop a data platform, data fusion algorithms, and data-based AI algorithms, which enable a connection with physical and hybrid models and the creation of a digital twin for different battery technologies and applications for improved battery modeling.

Among these, the Fraunhofer Institute of Integrated Systems and Device Technology IISB in Erlangen is dedicated to front-end process development, as well as development of Cognitive Power Electronic (CPE) systems, including electrical power converters and electrical energy storage systems for all kind of mobile and stationary applications (e.g., airborne, waterborne, industrial, military, automotive, space). The Intelligent Energy Systems develops advanced technologies and electronic modules for the digitalization of power conversion and energy storage systems for mobile and stationary applications, thus building our “Cognitive Power Electronics” ecosystem that covers the entire power range from a few milliwatts up to several gigawatts. In the Battery Systems group at Fraunhofer IISB we meet the growing demand by developing innovative solutions for rechargeable electrical energy storage systems, such as lithium-ion or redox flow batteries in mobile or stationary applications. Our focus lies on the safety, lifetime and reliability of the systems. We cover the entire development process, starting with the electrical, mechanical and thermal design of battery modules and packs, and ending with commissioning and integration. This also includes cell characterization, modeling, advanced state estimation algorithms (e.g., state of health (SOH)) hardware and software development for battery and energy management systems (BMS) and energy management systems (EMS), as well as and the design of complex energy storage systems. The Battery Systems group is the initiator and developer of the foxBMS project and continuously improves the BMS with the outputs of public as well as even private funded projects. The Data Analytics group develops innovative AI-based solutions to get the most out of data generated in the context of smart power electronics and Industry 4.0. The basis for this is an application-oriented and domain knowledge-oriented approach that includes system analysis, design, data acquisition, filtering, clustering, and finally the development and implementation of intelligent algorithms in embedded systems or in industrial processes. In the new research area Cognitive Power Electronics 4.0 (CPE4.0), Fraunhofer IISB combines its core competence in the field of power electronic systems with data analytics and artificial intelligence.
